Hello, friend.

Walter
Harbor

Traveling the world for 40 years. I love cooking in the wild. A man of peace.

Walter Harbor with his long braided beard, orange jacket and pink backpack, standing on a windy mountain pass above snowy peaks
Above the clouds. Windy day!
Walter sipping tea from a tin cup at sunrise, pink-lit mountains behind him
Tea before talk.
Walter leaning on a rail above a turquoise lake
Rain on the pines.
Walter smiling back over his shoulder in a mossy forest
Caught me smiling!
40years on the road
1cast-iron pan. The same one, since day one.
2braids in the beard. The wind decides the rest.

From the journal

I left home with a small pack and a pan.

Forty years later I still have the pan. The pack turned pink somewhere along the way. Long story. Good story.

I have crossed deserts, slept above the clouds, and shared bread with strangers who became friends. Everywhere I go, I find the same thing: people gather around a fire and a good meal.

That is where peace begins. Not in big speeches. In a warm bowl, passed from one hand to another.

Snapshots from the road

Wish you were here.

Walter smiling back over his shoulder on a wooden boardwalk through a mossy old forest, pink backpack on
Old trees, wet boards, good company. The old forest
Walter at a canyon lookout, watching a tall waterfall fall between yellow cliffs
The waterfall was loud. I was quiet. We got along fine. The canyon
Walter leaning on a rail above a bright turquoise lake, with rain drops on the pine branches
Rain on the pines. A lake the color of a dream. The lake
Walter sipping tea from a tin cup at sunrise, pink-lit mountains reflected in a still river behind him
Dawn tea. The mountains blushed first. Sunrise

Rules of the road

Six things forty years taught me.

  1. Keep it simple. Five good ingredients beat twenty.
  2. Leave no trace. Small fires. Take your trash. Thank the land.
  3. Always cook for one more. Someone will come by.
  4. Learn "thank you" in every language you meet.
  5. Walk slow, listen long. The best stories come to the patient.
  6. Peace first. Then dinner. Then more peace.
